The Academy Software Foundation and the Alliance for OpenUSD Collaborate to Accelerate USD Development

We are excited to announce a new liaison relationship with the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), solidifying the path for cross-collaboration across our organizations and accelerating open source adoption and interoperability across the industry.

The foundation for this new relationship centers around the Academy Software Foundation’s growing USD Working Group, which is supported by an active community of more than 1,000 participants. The Working Group (WG) mainly focuses on consolidating and sharing best practices for the deployment of USD technologies, and providing vetted solutions for common issues raised in USD support channels. The Academy Software Foundation’s USD Working Group is working with AOUSD’s Core Spec Working Group to represent the interests, ideas and techniques developed by the USD WG’s vibrant community.

AOUSD’s new Materials Working Group will also collaborate with the Academy Software Foundation on material interchange through MaterialX. Created to define the strategy for material representation in OpenUSD, the first item of the AOUSD Materials Working Group is to standardize the MaterialX standard library with OpenUSD in UsdShade. This means that any conforming OpenUSD implementation will have access to a common, standardized set of shader nodes for building materials that work across renderers, without requiring a dependency on a particular shading backend.
